Why October Matters
Updated: Sep 18
Every October, the world turns a little pink. Ribbons appear, buildings light up, and conversations begin. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month- a time to pause and pay attention. I can think of no better moment to open this space.
Awareness is more than a colour or a ribbon. At its heart, it is an invitation to understand our own bodies. It gently reminds us to notice changes, to ask questions, and to seek care. And it reminds us that we are not alone in this.
Breast cancer touches so many lives- mothers, sisters, daughters, friends. In Hong Kong, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. According to the latest data from the Hong Kong Cancer Registry, approximately 1 in 13 women in Hong Kong will develop breast cancer before the age of 75. Yet early detection saves lives, and understanding is where it begins. That is why this month, and this message, matter so much.
So this October, I hope you'll take a small, kind step: learn a little about your own breast health. Notice what feels normal for you, so change is easier to spot. And if something worries you, please speak to your doctor.
If you're new here, this is only the beginning of a longer conversation. My deeper hope for this space is a personal one. I built it to make breast health a little less frightening—for you. You can read more about why, and what brought me here.
Welcome. I'm so glad October brought you to this space.
